"So...who's that?"
"Huh?" Asher looked over at the woman Marco motioned towards. She was stood next to her grumpy-looking horse, with a face like thunder. "Ah. Her."
"She's that bad?"
"Pretty much. She's fucking insane. That's Laurel McPyre. Trust me, just stay out of her way." Marco stared a little too long, and Asher gave him a shove. "Don't stare like that! She'll notice!"
"Ow! What's she going to do?"
"Break your arm, probably." Asher folded his arms and shot a glance at her. "She's a machine, Marco. She's got one of the highest kill counts this side of the war. She's returned from battles the last one standing- that's how she got into the Elite Unit. Caiaphas Vailack is the only one who she listens to."
Marco blinked. Laurel was in no way dainty, that much was for sure, but something still surprised him about that information. There weren't many women in the Corps, especially the Caballai Corps, and the fact that she was so high up in the pecking order- she had to be something special. The Corps remained rather sexist as well as elitist, after all.

Woooo, so this is Crusoe's Chosen! His final Chosen, and he'll stay with her forever and ever now! <3 ~~Well until they die~~ I MEAN NOTHING. They don't die, don't panic. xD

So, his Chosen is called Laurel McPyre, as Asher says, and she's certainly a force to be reckoned with. No one really knows where she came from; she has no family to speak for her, and joined up of her own accord. Rumours abound about her, but many think that she's the daughter of a gang leader in the heart of Fortose- the Fortosian equivalent of a 'Mafia', if you will. It's true that she is an ex-criminal, as Caiaphas often mentions that she didn't kill her first man on the battlefield, but in a backstreet. Once she joined up, she was placed in a normal unit that was typically 'cannon fodder'- she returned from every onslaught unscathed and just more angry with the world around her. She moved up the ranks quickly, and eventually reached the position of second in command in the Elite Unit. This is where she met Caiaphas, and though she resisted his authority for a while, the two become close friends. It's mainly based on a mutual respect: both know what the other is capable of, and they work well together on the battlefield.

Laurel is sometimes put in charge of green recruits, and though isn't the best person to comfort and assure, she gets results and always gets her allocated group through their first offensive. She has a sort of gruff confidence that makes people feel that she can do no wrong, and the enemy are even aware of her; they call her the Valkyrie.

She and Crusoe get off to a shaky start, but after a while the two share a genuine affection for each other. Crusoe loves the thrill of battle, and Laurel is the type who gives it to him.

Laurel is also engaged to a soldier in the aerial corps and the two cut a strange shadow. Her fiancee is a well-meaning and friendly individual, a few years her junior, and I think she's only engaged to him down to his persistence than much else
